Don’t Waste Your Money on These Closet Organizing Products
Some organizing products support systems. Others become the problem.
As a professional organizer, I’ve worked in countless closets, and more often than not, I find the same organizing products headed for the donation pile.
Before you spend money on products that won’t hold up or support your routine, focus on creating simple systems first. The right organizing products should support your space, not create more frustration.
Here are five closet organizing products I typically recommend skipping.
Before you fill your cart, here’s what I would leave behind
Fabric Hanging Shelves
While fabric hanging shelves can seem like an easy way to add storage, they often lose their shape over time, causing items to sag, shift, and fall out of place.
They also take up valuable hanging space on your closet rod and don’t make the best use of vertical storage.
In most closets, they create more frustration than function. More often then not, I skip these for my clients.
2. Plastic Drawer Towers
I rarely recommend plastic drawer towers for closets. They’re often flimsy, the drawers can stick or become misaligned over time, and the bulky plastic design limits how much you can actually store.
The wheels are and make it hard to roll. While they may seem like a quick fix, they’re often one of the first products I see replaced—or donated—once a more functional system is in place.
3. Over-the-Door Organizers
While over-the-door organizers can be helpful in certain situations, they’re often flimsy, shift around when used, and can interfere with shelves or the closet door itself.
The pockets can sag over time, making items difficult to access, and some materials don’t hold up well with long-term use. More often than not, they’re a temporary solution that eventually ends up in the donation pile.
Cheap Fabric Storage Bins
While budget-friendly fabric bins can be useful, they don’t always hold up well in high-use areas. Over time, they can lose their shape and make a space feel messy rather than organized.
For everyday items, I recommend investing in sturdier products that will better support your system. For seasonal or infrequently used items, these bins can be a good way to save money without sacrificing function.
Mis-Matched Hangers
While they may seem harmless, mismatched hangers create visual clutter and make a closet feel less organized.
Different hanger styles can also cause clothing to hang unevenly and take up more space than necessary.
A matching set of high-quality hangers is one of the simplest ways to create a more polished, functional closet.
Remember, organizing products are tools, not solutions. Focus on creating simple systems first, then choose products that support the way you live and use your space.
When you’re intentional about what you buy, you’ll create a closet that’s functional, easy to maintain, and built to last.
