Why I Became a Professional Organizer: My Story

From Medical Laboratory Technologist to Professional Organizer.

I’ve always been an organized person, but like many people, I found that different seasons of life required new systems and a different kind of support to stay that way.

Before starting my organizing business, I worked as a laboratory technologist in a hospital - and I truly loved what I did. I’ve always been someone who wants to help people, and that job felt like it aligned with that part of me.

What I especially loved was the structure and the predictability. Everything had a clear process- step by step, methodical, organized. You followed a system, and you got results. There was something really comforting about that.

That job also gave me something even more meaningful- it’s where I met my husband. We built our life together, and eventually welcomed our two kids, both born at the very same hospital we worked in.

Everything was going well. Our careers were progressing, we were busy, and life was full.

But at home, something subtle was shifting- the space that once supported us was starting to feel harder to keep up with.

Little by Little, Our Home Started to Feel Heavier…

more cluttered. less supportive.

With long commutes, demanding schedules, and life with small kids - things were coming into our home faster than they were leaving.

Day-to-day tasks like laundry and cleaning were enough to keep up with, and the deeper organization- the systems, the upkeep, the intention behind our space- kept getting pushed aside.

And then, in the middle of already feeling stretched thin and only 2 weeks in at my new job, I experienced a deep personal loss- my Dad suddenly passed away.

I was suddenly moving through deep grief while life around me continued on. In many ways, it felt like everything was unraveling.

Life felt too full, emotional and unpredictable and I didn’t have the capacity to maintain the level of order in my home I once relied on.

My home started to feel just like me- overwhelmed, scattered, and out of control.

That’s when I began seeking clarity and calm by decluttering and organizing my home

I began letting go of things in my home that no longer served us and gently cleared out clutter that had built up in different spaces over time.

It wasn’t about doing everything at once- it was about slowly making space again.

One drawer, one corner, one room at a time.

With each small shift, I began to feel a sense of calm returning. Those small steps started to build momentum, and my home began to feel lighter, and more manageable again.

Creating order around you creates calm within you

As I continued this process, something began to shift. What started as a way to feel more at ease in my own home slowly became something I felt deeply drawn to. I realized how much of a difference even small amounts of order and intention could make- not just in how a space looked, but in how it felt to live in.

I started to see organizing in a new way. It wasn’t just about decluttering or tidying up, it was about creating calm, restoring clarity, and supporting the way people wanted to feel in their everyday lives.

And that stayed with me.

Eventually, what began as personal healing in my own home grew into something more

That experience led me to step into professional organizing, and from that Shelf Care Organizing was born- a name rooted in the idea that caring for ourselves, our spaces, and our homes is really another form of caring for ourselves.

Now I help clients create spaces that feel calm, supportive, and aligned with the lives they want to live.

This work has been deeply rewarding. It fills my cup in a way that feels both meaningful and steady, because I get to witness real change- not just in homes, but in how people feel within them.

And that’s why I do what I do.

If this resonates with you, I would love to help you create a home that feels calm, clear and supportive.
