A Real-Life Approach to Decluttering (Without the Overwhelm)

Little Moments, Lighter Spaces

Decluttering on your own doesn’t have to happen in big, perfectly planned 6-hour marathon sessions- it can happen in the small moments of your day.

For me, I love to declutter with intention as I move through my routines. I’ll often come across something I no longer use, need or love, and instead of waiting for a “decluttering day”, I simply let it go right then and there.

It’s this kind of micro-decluttering that keeps my home feeling lighter, without the overwhelm.

Let me show you what this can look like in real life, in the everyday moments you’re already moving through.

Reducing the excess across your home will make it easier to keep it organized

Moment #1: In the Kitchen

The next time you are cooking or honestly moving throughout your kitchen day to day, take a moment to notice what you use- and what you don’t.

Ditch expired items and let go of items you never reach for.

Remove duplicates you don’t need (you only need one favourite peeler or go to spatula).

Even small amounts count- like when you’re pouring your morning coffee on the weekend, take a good look at your mugs. Keep the ones you love and use, and let the rest go.

And let’s be honest… You probably have a water bottle (or 5) that you can absolutely declutter:)

And as you make these small edits, try to shift your thinking from “I am losing these things” to “I am creating space for what I actually use, need, and love".

When your cabinets and drawers feel spacious and breathable, it becomes so much easier to put things away, maintain your systems, and reset your space without friction.

Less clutter means less to manage, less visual noise, and a lighter mental load and who doesn’t need more of that?!

Pro Tip

Keep a dedicated basket/bin in a convenient spot in your home and as you move through your day drop in anything you no longer use, need, or love.

Once it’s full, take it straight to a donation center- no big decluttering session required.

Moment #2: With the Laundry

Most of us have no problems starting the laundry. Into the washer? Fine. Into the dryer? Still fine. But that final step- from the dryer to where everything actually belongs? That’s where the friction hits!

That’s where I see the task fall apart- laundry baskets sitting around, piles of clothes on the floor or beds, coupled with that annoyance every time you see them.

And that’s exactly where the edit comes in.

If putting laundry away feels hard, it’s usually not the task itself - it’s the system.

Overstuffed drawers, too many clothes, not enough hangers, messy shelves and clothes on your closet floor. …of course, that feels frustrating.

As you put your clean clothes away, take a moment to edit. If you are shoving items in, pulling things out to make space, or avoiding a drawer altogether, that’s your cue to let something go.

The goal is simple: make it easy to put things away. When there’s space, when everything has a home, and when it all makes sense to you, the task flows. No overthinking, no resistance - just fold, put away and move on with your day.

When you shift your mindset from thinking decluttering has to be a big, all-cosuming project to something you can weave into your everyday routines, it starts to feel lighter and far more doable.

Those small, seemingly insignicant edits add up- creating more space, more calm, and a home that feels easier to live in, without the overwhelm.

Moment #3: At the End of the Day

As you reset your home at the end of the day (or start your morning), look for just one thing to let go of.

While you're settling in for the evening and washing your face, toss expired items or beauty products you no longer love, need or use.

Clear out a junk drawer one handful at a time while tucking things away where they belong.

Recycle old paper or school forms while straightening up the kitchen.

Decluttering in these moments isn't about adding another thing to your never-ending to-do list; it’s about lightening your physical and mental load. One item at a time and with intention and clarity.

When decluttering becomes part of your everyday rhythm, it no longer feels overwhelming- it just feels lighter.

If you're wishing someone could just come in and take this off your plate, I’m here for that, too.
